FOXBORO - Long after Sammy Morris spoke to reporters yesterday, the running back’s helmet hung on the corner of his locker stall.
The silver helmet sported some fresh chips and spots of black paint, the result of his hard running earlier in the day, when he rushed six times for 21 yards and a touchdown. Morris also caught five passes for 35 yards in the Patriots [team stats]’ 27-21 win against Baltimore.
“The line, we have a ton of confidence in Sammy,” guard Logan Mankins [stats] said. “We figure if we give him a crease he’s going to blow through there and it’s going to take more than one guy to stop him behind the line.”
Although Morris’ final rushing stats weren’t overly impressive, the way he got the yardage was. With the Patriots facing fourth-and-1 at the Ravens 3-yard line on the last play of the first quarter, Morris plowed through the line for a first down. The Pats scored two plays later for a 10-7 lead.
In the fourth quarter, Morris’ number again was called on short yardage, and again he delivered, picking up 2 yards on third-and-1 from the Baltimore 17. The drive ended in a Stephen Gostkowski field goal that gave the Pats a six-point lead.
“We said from the start we need to execute better,” Morris said. “Whether it be third down or in the red zone, it’s about executing and keeping the drives going. Keeping the drives going allows you to stay on the field longer and make more plays.”
Morris’ contributions weren’t limited to between-the-tackles plunges. His second-quarter TD run came on a 12-yard draw off right tackle after Brady audibled away from a pass.
Morris was also a force in the passing game. Frequently split out wide, he was second on the team with the five receptions.
“I’ve always felt comfortable doing that kind of stuff,” Morris said. “I think it’s something that I’m able to do and bring to the offense, and they called my number.”
Regardless of whether it was at running back, fullback or wideout, Morris didn’t care what his role was.
“When I first came here,” Morris said, “coach (Bill) Belichick was always talking about that we’ll define our own roles by what we’re able to do and show them that we can do.”
Morris showed what he can do yesterday.
